Gin Palace Is Back Open. Here’s What’s New

After a month-long renovation, Melbourne institution Gin Palace is back open. A mainstay in the city’s bar circuit since 1997, the basement venue is famous for its 200-strong gin menu, its coveted chicken sandwich and, above all, its lush interiors. But behind the velvet curtains, chandeliers and plush red banquettes, it was a different story.

“A lot of the stuff behind the scenes was in desperate need of repair,” owner Ben Luzz tells Broadsheet. “The bar was not up to scratch for the number of

In a surprise statement this morning, Frontier Touring confirmed it’s dropping a new lot of Taylor Swift tickets for her Sydney and Melbourne Eras concerts, starting at $65.90.

A small catch: the tickets won’t grant full view of the stage. “You will be required to acknowledge this prior to proceeding with the purchase of tickets in these sections,” Frontier wrote in a statement. “In some instances, side screens will be visible from these seats to help enhance the view.”

Do-Nothing Feminism and the Documentation of the Banal

Her pink-themed Instagram page best encapsulates this. The page consists mostly of short videos of her morning routine, always commencing with the same exclamation – “good fucking morning!” Dressing her slim white body in flamboyant 70s clothing and red lipstick, Given leaps and sways around her spacious London flat, pouring coffee from a Smeg machine into a leopard-print teacup as she begins a day of “romanticising her own life”.

Much like the “little life” videos, Given does nothing in the

“It’s Like a Big Break-Up”: After the Fire, Ascot Food & Wine Will Not Reopen

For nine years, Ascot Food & Wine embodied the spirit of a true local. Originally opened as a cafe, the unassuming Moonee Ponds eatery was finally granted a liquor license in 2019 to become what co-owner and head chef Dave Stewart always dreamt it would be: an all-day bistro, serving up wine and cocktails, classic Melbourne-breakfasts, and delicious but accessible European-inspired dinners.

Despite the success of the venue (which is also co-owned by model Megan Gale and former footballer Shaun

Brunswick Music Festival 2024

The group joins international acts Wednesday and Witch in the 36th year of Melbourne’s longest-running inner-city music festival. Plus, the debut edition of night-time lawn bowls (with BYO biscuits and cake).

The nine-day Brunswick Music Festival always kicks off with Sydney Road Street Party. On day one the suburb’s main thoroughfare will once again transform for a day of music, food and art.

From there, 60 gigs will take place at 30 venues scattered across the inner north, including The Retr

Revered Victorian Cheesemaker Holy Goat Announces Closure

In a move that will dismay cheese-lovers across the country, the couple behind Holy Goat has announced the end of production. In a somewhat enigmatic Instagram post on Monday night, Ann-Marie Monda and Carla Meurs offered a poetic farewell to their beloved goat dairy and cheese room, saying, “To live today and not project into the future and accept impermanence expands our life rather than limits it.”

Holy Goat started in 1999. After working on a goat farm in Western Australia, the couple (who

First Look: Head to Publique at the Queen Victoria Market for Stacked Sourdough Loaves and Classic Pastries

Sunghoon Kim started his baking career at classic Carlton North sourdough-specialty spot Natural Tucker back in 2005. It’s no surprise, then, that the chef’s own bakery, Publique, is best known for sourdough loaves, and even sourdough croissants.

In 2011, after six years spent training at bakeries around Melbourne, Kim opened Publique at the Preston Market. The store has a loyal following, and Kim says customers would ask “all the time” if he would open another venue. Last week, after years of

Now Open: Vintage-Inspired Denim Label Rolla’s Rolls Out a Dapper New Store in Brighton

Since its inception in 2013, Australian denim label Rolla’s has been making jeans that have become a favourite of fashion girls (and boys).

Over the past decade it’s gained a global following, with its flattering signature curved back-pocket stitching seen on models such as Bella Hadid and Sofia Richie, as well as Aussie actress Phoebe Tonkin. Yet despite that international success, the same laid-back spirit that inspires its designs still infuses its stores, including its latest, which opened

Restaurants Will Soon Have to Disclose Where Their Seafood Comes From

If you’ve ever wondered (or worried) about where the fish on your plate comes from, we have some good news. Under a forthcoming law, all Australian restaurants will soon have to disclose the origin of their seafood. On Friday November 24, state and federal consumer affairs ministers unanimously agreed to implement country of origin labelling (COOL), which was previously only required at supermarkets and other retail businesses. Restaurants, cafes, pubs and clubs will now have to label seafood as
